ABOUT ORIENT & FLUME

Orient & Flume is located in Chico,
California. The company was formed in 1972.
It started out with two people. Douglas
Boyd and David Hopper. They made the glass
in a house that they had bought on Orient
& Flume Street in Chico. The Company has
moved since then. They are still located in
Chico, but on Park Avenue. To see a map and

They started out earlier by selling thier glass
at Art Festivals.

Thier early efforts were directed towards
recreating the silver luster or iridescent
glass from the earlier years of Tiffany and
Steuben. They still do some of this along with
Paper Weight Vase's and Paper Weight's.

They have what is called a "First".
This is a piece that only 250 items were
made. These items are serialized and signed
Orient & Flume and the newer glass is also
signed by the artist.

Then they have what is called
a "Second". These items have been
mass produced and are also numbered,
but they are signed O & F.

They do a lot of Torch work, which is
using a hand held torch and a peice of
colored glass that melts as they are drawing
the design into the glass.

Thier creations are in permanent
collections of the Metropolitan Museum,
the Smithsonian Museum, the Chicago Arts
Institute, the Chrysler Museum and the
Corning Glass Museum.

If you go on a day that the Glass Blowers
are there, they are more than happy
to have you watch them create thier wares.
They will even explain the process to you.
Saturdays are the best as they can create
what ever they want, without having to make
what they need for production. I have seen them
create some awesome glass. Some of it went up
into the show room and some they gave away
to friends and family.

I found a vase that was an early peice,
it was not signed. But I took it into their
shop and asked them to identify it for me.
They did with no problem and even signed
and dated it. They even showed me pictures
of the time they were selling the glass at Art
Festivals. They brought these out as that was
when this vase was made. Before the company ever
began.

This glass is considered highly desirable
by collectors and will be for a long time
to come.

They now have a site up so stop by and
meet all the artists it is a great site!
